Except in this case. SAW is normally around $450-500, and the Audio
Rack #1 (the effects processing module - more are planned) is usually
around $300. After SAWPlus is announced, there will be a special
offer made to existing SAW users for about 6-8 weeks, and the upgrade
to SAWPlus will be $400. The list price for SAWPlus will be around
$1000. Either way, around $1K, whether you're a current user or hold
out for the May release.

Subject: 1 MBb midi bank for patch manager
Hello out there,
I was wondering if anyone out there has a good midi bank for patchmanager (preferebly
a drum & a melodic bank that will load together in all my GUS mem (of one Mb) when
the patchloading is put on 8 bit, to conserve memory). The reason I'm asking is
because I just got King's Quest VII and I didn't get any music, (I asked about that
here, but noone replied) And just now I found out that when I preload the patches my
self I can get music, but I have no way of knowing which patches to map to which
instrument. So, any help would be apreciated. Or, is it possible to use the ini-file
from loadpats.exe or something likewise?
Thanks
Remco

Hi,
you need the oficial MSCDEX documentation from Microsoft. The last one out
I know of is from version 2.20; look for the file DR0498.ZIP somewhere
(sorry, I don't remember the directory) at ftp.microsoft.com.
Also, if you wanna see the best (IMHO :-) ) DOS-based CD audio player,
then take a look at my SMART! CD. You can get it from oak.oakland.edu at
/SimTel/msdos/cdrom/smrtcd20.zip. This is version 2.0; version 3.0 will be
released soon. The main advantage of SMART! CD is its ability to save and
restore CDs and tracks titles, what I call the "Know-What-You-Are-Listening-
To" function! Many other great features are available, and version 3.0 is
almost ready and looking good!
BTW, if anybody else has interest in CD players and got the time to test
SMART! CD, I would appreciate any feedback you can send me. I'm also looking
for documentation on later versions of MSCDEX.
Best regards,
Henrique.

I remember in a previous digest someone mentioning a problem getting
Warcraft to work with Megaem or SBOS. I purchased the game, and it worked
fine with SBOS *for*a*while*. Now I keep getting a DOS4G error. I don't
think I've changed anything, but this error is consistent, and it works
fine without sound now. Anyone have any ideas on how to get this game to
work?
Also, this game seems to use the AIL drivers for sound. Here's some info
from the beginning of the drivers in HEX format. Maybe someone can
suggest a driver that I could install over these.
Here's from SBLASTER.DIG:

000030 00 00 00 00 1A 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................
And from another driver called MPU401.MDI:

000030 00 00 00 00 E2 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................
Anyone know if these are in fact AIL drivers?

This happened to me on the disk version too. Don't worry, the music
starts up again. I don't know if it was intentional or not but after
playing the game for hours and hours and hours (best game of the year in
my opinion!) I actually found the short period of relative silence to be
quite welcome.

Why use a JOYSTICK?!?! This is a doom-game, right, so keyboard and mouse

This shouldn't affect your native support.

hmm? the first comment you quoted said PowerPC was better (at floating

ppc... never mind anyway :)

Hmmm. In fact the MIDI playback capabilities are identical :) Shows PC
mag know what they are talking about!
I wonder if they would have been even more impressed by Ultrasound ACE,
for costing $40 less or so and having the same MIDI?

Possibly the same as the 500 disks of patches available from some weird
company or other. I had a few demos of these, they weren't too special.

um? AWE has SB compat. in hardware, it's GM that needs the TSR, right?

> Hi again, Where are the latest and "bestest" instrument patches for the GUS?
Don't know, but cruise along to Xography's Web page (a demo group, if that
helps you find it, I don't have the URL right now) and then choose music
information, and there are a few sites, one of which has loads of Kurzweil
patches that can be converted to GUS format and might be good. The others
are supposed to have `convertible' samples for other pro-samplers, but I
couldn't get the links to work.
> Also, does anyone have any patch for effects like footsteps, heartbeat, etc?
Possibly on some of these archives. (if there weren't any in propats).
Alternatively make your own. My `block dropping' thud sound effect in
Netris game started off as me dropping the mike onto the floor, or
stamping my foot next to it, or something :)

Are you sure the files are identical apart from the soundcard drivers?
Otherwise, have you tried different IRQs for the gus? I mean I don't
SUPPOSE it's the same as the mouse, but you never know...
By the way, our mouse disappears sometimes with TCP/IP software. You can
fix it usually by running a fullscreen dosprompt and coming back, without
having to restart windows.

Subject: GUS lock ups!
I just recently upgraded my motherboard and video card... but
unbeknownst to me, this would screw up my game playing because now my
gus doesn't work properly. Maybe i just fried the gus, but that's why
i'm posting this..if you can help me, please drop me a line. Here's the
stuff:
I have an ASUS PCI/I-486SP3G with an Intel DX/2 50Mhz processor
this has a built in PCI SCSI controller... which needs lots of tsr
drivers (might be the problem..i dunno yet)
And i have a Genoa 8900PCI
I get no conflicts in the gus setup, and things actually run okay.. but
all my games eventually lock up. These includes the following: Creature
shock, heretic, malcolm's revenge, and i think a few smaller games i
can't remember right now.
I tried booting up with no tsr's but some are needed to run the cdrom
which some of my games are on.
Does this sound like an odd problem or what? anyway, please email me if
you can help..
thanx in advance..

Hi all-
I know that this has probably been covered before, but after checking everything
I could, I still cannot find an answer to this problem:
Is there a way to get Future Crew's demo, "Panic", to work with the GUS? The
documentation that came with the 3.59 disks says that SBOS will work with it.
However, after trying this, I still get no sound. Is there any way to get it
to work?

I've experienced this problem myself. If I can recall, I warned GUSsers
who use this patch will need to copy the THM?.XMI (the question mark
represents a number from 1 to 10) files from the /sound/sblaster directory
to the /sound/genmidi directory. This should solve your problem. Worked
for me...
Good luck, and happy GUSsing.
